A few minutes by car from San Giovanni Rotondo, you can visit the old town of Monte Sant’Angelo. Tradition says that here, in the fifth century, the Archangel Michael will be revealed to the faithful giving birth to one of the most intense phenomena of pilgrimage dedicated to the archangel Michael.
Gargano, the sacred mountain consecrated to the cult of St. Michael, in the Middle Ages became an important crossroads of European pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land.
Among the monuments to visit in town are worth mentioning, in addition to the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo – dug into the cave and decorated with numerous works of art like the statue of San Michele attributed to Sansovino – even the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Baptistery of San Giovanni (erroneously known as the tomb of Rotari), the Norman-Swabian, Aragonese and the famous Junno district, the oldest part of town, consists entirely of white houses huddled together in a tangle very suggestive of houses and alleys.
